In the 1937 Egyptian drama Nashid Al-Amal (Song of Hope), Umm Kulthum plays Amal, a gifted singer torn between love and artistic ambition amid societal pressure to choose marriage over her career. Her sacrifice reflects the era’s expectations for women, while subtly contrasting Kulthum’s real-life defiance. Through powerful performances, the film explores the conflict between duty and aspiration. Recently restored in Cairo with support from the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, Song of Hope endures as a cinematic classic
The film will be presented as part of an outdoor screening program from 21 to 25 January.
